چکیده

In the developing embryo the foregut is surrounded by a group of vascular structures of bilateral distribution connected with the branchial arches. Portions of these arches are obliterated to form the normally described aorta and great vessels. The ultimate persistence of only one main vascular arch, the left, as the aorta, permits the trachea and oesophagus to lie freely to its right side. Where, however, the vascular obliteration in the embryo stage is abnormal, the residual vessels may so closely surround the trachea and oesophagus that either or both become compressed and symptoms are produced (Fig. 1). The first description of this anatomical abnormality appears to have been made by Hommel in 1737. Quain in his surgical anatomy (1844) gives the following account:

Stridor in a Newborn with Double Aortic Arch-A Case Report

Introduction: Double aortic arch (DAA) is a congenital anomaly of the aortic arch. It is the most common type of complete vascular ring. When it occurs, the connected segment of the aortic arch and its branches encircle the trachea and esophagus, leading to symptoms related to these two structures. Case Report: We present a case of a newborn baby who developed biphasic stridor immediately after...

Vascular cause for stridor in infants.

Case presentation A 6-month-old infant presented with a longstanding persistent cough, episodic spells of shortness of breath, gasping-like efforts after feeding, and an unusual noise while breathing, and was reported to have turned blue on two occasions after feeding. A chest X-ray showed significant narrowing of the trachea 2 cm above the carina. An upper gastro-intestinal study (Fig. 1) show...

Dyspnea in Patient with Arteria Lusoria: A Case Report

Introduction: Arteria lusoria is an aberrant right subclavian artery. In symptomatic cases, patients report dysphagia and only in few cases dyspnea, due to external compression of the trachea and esophagus. Symptoms occur in advanced age and diagnosis is made with chest HRCT, when other causes of dysphagia have been excluded.    Case Report: An 83-year-old woman presented with dyspnea and m...

Computed tomography in the evaluation of vascular rings and slings

Vascular rings are congenital abnormalities of the aortic arch-derived vascular and ligamentous structures, which encircle the trachea and oesophagus to varying degrees, resulting in respiratory or feeding difficulties in children. A sling is an abnormality of the pulmonary arterial system resulting in airway compression. Although several imaging examinations are available for the evaluation of...
